The 2011 Chevrolet Volt makes its debut as General Motors' first plug-in gas/electric vehicle. It is expected to see limited production in calendar 2010, with availability only in California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC. Nationwide sales are slated for late-calendar 2011. GM calls this 4-passenger, 4-door hatchback an "extended-range electric vehicle," because it has, in effect, two different drivetrains: an all-electric one (battery and motors) that drive the car for the first 40 or so miles after a full plug-in recharge, and a gas-powered hybrid system (with gas engine and fuel tank) that automatically takes over after that to give about another 300 miles of range. The front-wheel-drive 2011 Volt is powered by an electric motor rated at 149 hp (111 kilowatts) and 273 pound-feet of torque. This motor draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack until the battery charge is 70 percent depleted. At that point, the Volt's 1.4-liter four-cylinder internal combustion engine, which runs on either gasoline or E85, comes to life as a replacement power source for the electric motor.
The climate controls are are touch-sensitive, but lack (mostly) traditional push buttons or turning knobs. The Volt features an optional hard drive for added storage of music and maps, and comes standard with Bluetooth functionality that Chevrolet says can be used for phone and music use.The Volt is available with either a base purchase price of $41,000, or a three-year lease starting at $350 per month.
Cost is an important consideration, because the Volt starts at $41,000 and can rise as high as $44,680 with options. (Buyers get a one-time federal tax credit of $7,500, reducing the out-of-pocket price to $33,500 - $37,180.) Chevy also offers a lease for $2,500 down and $350 per month for 36 months. Neither price includes the 240 volt charging station (link goes to photo), which costs $490 plus around $1,500 to install. (The Volt can be charged from an ordinary 110V household outlet, but charge time is 10-12 hours versus 4 hours for the 240V charger.)
