MRAP field tested, US Marine approved. 500 lb bomb exploded under it, lifted and flipped around, and no one died

The drivers ribs were broken when the steering wheel pounded into them, damn good thing steering wheels are designed to bend instead of busting up torsos
Thanks to Mike for the email about this!

Nobody messes with King Kong

Howitzer, 1946 is the label on the photo. Found on the HAMB

1967 Trabant Kubel... somewhere a WW2 axis staff car is looking at this and thinking "I will call it mini-me! "

funding ran out for this ground effects cruise missle carrying seaplane

this aircraft used the ground effect – extra lift of large wings when close to the waters surface, a maximum of three meters above the sea but at the same time could provide take off, stable “flight” and safe “landing” in conditions of up to 5-meter waves. These were originally developed by the Soviet Union as high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea.

Imagine how big the pothole has to be to stop a Russian C300 missile system launch platform

from http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2010/04/03/wounded-dinosaur/ for more photos and a video of it stuck during the parade rehearsal. Well, that's what rehearsals are for.

Cool airplanes interest almost everyone.

I wasn't sure what the aircraft on the ground was (above it you see the B52 that it used for piggy back rides to test altitude) , but 3 readers used the comment feature to let me know it was the Northrop HL 10, used to do flight research on aircraft design for unpowered reentry from space, utilizing the speed of falling to create lift for the controlled flight of the spacecraft. More interesting than the facts of it's intended R&D use, is that it was the featured spacecraft the Million Dollar Man tv show appeared to use as the crash vehicle that made it necesary to create the bionic man. Just a fun tidbit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_HL-10

Amelia Earheart and her Cord
Bombers, love them, love the look, the stories, the awesome amount of turret guns

Jeeps, marvelous vehicle, simple to assemble, disassemble, and get into the battlefields (dropped with parachutes)

If you haven't seen one of them field stripped yet, enjoy! http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/09/most-amazing-thing-youll-see-all-week.html

One big honking vehicle, the TC-497 Overland Train, Obsolete the day it was finished

Above image from Big Lorry Blog, where there are a couple more photos and the info that one is restored and at Ft Yuma Arizona http://www.roadtransport.com/blogs/big-lorry-blog/2010/10/more-le-tourneau-overland-trai.html#more
In the 1950s the LeTourneau company developed several overland trains, essentially oversized semi-trailer trucks that could travel over almost any terrain. Their intention was to be able to handle logistics needs without being dependent on local road or rail systems, allowing them to operate in back-country areas.

six-wheeled TC-497 Overland Train MkII used four Solar gas-turbine engines (at 1,170hp each, that’s 4,680hp total) to spin generators that delivered juice to 54 total motors – one for each of its wheels. Of its 12 trailers, two were dedicated just to carrying the turbines and generators. The Overland Train stretched 572 feet long, easily making it the world’s longest vehicle. Funny enough, it could only carry 150 tons of freight – as much as the Sno-Freighter – though it carried such developments as steerable trailer wheels that allowed the entire train more maneuverability.

Read about it here: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2009/11/19/54-wheel-drive-the-letourneau-electric-arctic-land-trains-that-put-australian-road-trains-to-shame/ because Dan at Hemmings wrote a cool long post about the land trains

Gen. Patton transferring from plane to car

In the photo are Gen Bradley, Hodges, Eisenhower and Patton in the short time before WW2. Gotta be a one of a kind photo I think.
Thanks for the photo Chris! aka http://chrisoncars.com/

Caradisiac... lots of interesting trucks to find there

This looks like something from the 1910's or 20's that had a crane mounted on the back decades after the truck was made

WW2 military Dodge Power Wagon that was made into a fire company auxillary vehicle

I often come across photos that I add to posts with similar items... but this time I'll just post the new stuff and links to where they would go

All those labels under these posts, and in the long column (about 1000) are there to help me, and you, find the stuff you are looking for. They sure help me find the things I recall having posted before, so I can add photos like these to the posts I want them in, or want to let you know where you can find similar things.

Photos of the unusual from days gone by thread on the HAMB

Sad.

Looks like 2 or 3 Buick bodies grafted together with an RV on top.
I just found this post on the Hemmings Blog, and it identifies this vehicle as having been called the ShamRockAway http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011/01/31/hemmings-find-of-the-day-the-shamrockaway
if you guessed the above is a stretched Locomobile Model 48 with a 525 CI six, you're right
Never seen Jeeps on a transporter before
